The Devon Rex originated from a single curly-coated kitten named Kirlee, born in Buckfastleigh, Devon, England in 1960. Kirlee's owner, Beryl Cox, initially thought he was related to the Cornish Rex (another curly-coated breed discovered in Cornwall), but breeding tests revealed they carried different genes. The Devon Rex was recognized as a separate breed and arrived in the US in the 1960s.
