The Bedlington Terrier was developed in the mining town of Bedlington, Northumberland, England in the early 19th century. They were bred by miners and Romani people as versatile working dogs — fast enough to catch rabbits, tough enough to fight badgers, and small enough to go underground. Their lamb-like appearance was deliberately cultivated to make them appear less threatening to gamekeepers who might otherwise shoot them as poaching dogs.
